Scattered showers today, but brighter outlook for Thursday and Friday

The thunderstorms have rumbled past, but scattered showers may still pop up today, as temperatures rise to the upper 70s or low 80s. The outlook for Thursday and Friday is mostly sunny, but the weekend may bring some clouds and rain, the National Weather Service says.

The storms Tuesday dumped heavy rain and hail on parts of Western Massachusetts. Thousands lost power when trees and limbs brought down power lines. A tornado watch was issued in Berkshire County, but none were sighted.

Weather service meteorologist Alan Dunham said the state was lucky to avoid more serious storms that caused flooding in parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. The hardest-hit areas in Massachusetts saw 2 inches of rain and wind gusts of 50 miles per hour.

The Cape may see some rain tonight due to Tropical Storm Beryl, which ravaged the southeastern United States earlier this week. The storm may miss the Cape entirely, but if it moves slightly to the west, Beryl may bring about an inch of rain, said Dunham. The mainland will likely not be affected, he said.

Highs on Thursday will be around 80 degrees. Overnight clouds will clear up in the morning.

On Friday, another high pressure system will move through the region, bringing cooler temperatures in the low to mid-70s.

There is a chance of rain overnight Friday into Saturday evening. Saturday will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s.

On Sunday, the forecast calls for clouds with highs in the low 70s.

Overnight temperatures will be cooler and more comfortable for the rest of the week and this weekend with lows dropping to the 50s.
