Franklin Park Zoo to begin construction on new, animal-themed playground, slated to open in July

Construction will start Tuesday on a new playground at the Franklin Park Zoo that is slated to open in early July.

The 10,000-sqare-foot area will replace the old playground next to Butterfly Landing, the zoo said today in a statement.

The playground’s design will represent more than 30 animals, including giraffes, peacocks, and Panamanian golden frogs.

While it was being designed, students from local schools were able to vote on components of the playground. Input from parents and teachers of special needs children were also included.

The structure will be funded and built by the Play 2 Dream Foundation, which aims to provide children with a healthy environment where they can be active and have fun.

The playground will have levels for children of different age groups. The zoo said that while they play, children can develop their flexibility, cardiovascular health, and also build coordination, balance, and endurance.

The main structure will include swings, slides, and climbers. Shaded areas, benches, and picnic tables for parents will also be built.

“The unique design brings the zoo into the playground in such a creative and dynamic way that children of all ages are going to light up with delight,’’ John Linehan, president and chief executive officer of Zoo New England, said in the statement. “We are so thrilled to present this new playground which will be enjoyed by families and children for years to come.’’
