CBS’s Jeff Glor stunned by Ted Nugent’s outburst

Of all the interviews Jeff Glor has done, both as a reporter with WHDH Channel 7 and since joining CBS News, his sitdown this week with reactionary rocker Ted Nugent ranks among the most interesting. The purpose of the chat, which was taped Wednesday at Nugent’s ranch near Waco, Texas and broadcast Friday morning, was to follow up on some inflammatory remarks the “Stranglehold’’ singer made last month. Speaking at a National Rifle Association convention, Nugent, who’s endorsed Mitt Romney for president, said: “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year….’’ The comments were perceived by some as a threat, and the Secret Service paid Nugent a visit. Reached Friday in New York, Glor told us the guitarist was “robust’’ and cheerful for most of the interview, but bristled at the suggestion that he isn’t “moderate.’’ Nugent explained that he has taken dying children on their last fishing trips. “Call me when you meet someone who does that more than I do. Because that’s really moderate … I’m an extremely loving, passionate man, and people who investigate me honestly, without the baggage of political correctness, ascertain the conclusion that I’m a damned nice guy … And if you can find a screening process more powerful than that ….’’ At that point, Nugent began spewing invective, first at Glor, then at female news producer Molly Kordares. “I was a little surprised at how animated he got suddenly,’’ said Glor, whose wife Nicole used to work for Regan Communications. “I thought he was going to get up and leave, but to his credit he stayed.’’ After the interview, Nugent’s wife directed her husband to apologize to the producer, which he did. Said Glor: “I don’t know how to describe it other than surprising.’’
