Brookline man charged with trying to steal Toyota from dealer showroom

A Brookline man who was out on bail was today arraigned on charges that he tried to steal a car from an Allston dealership, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office.

Ender Durgut, 39, was arraigned in Brighton District Court on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property, assault with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct, according the Suffolk DA’s office.

Durgut had been out on bail for a Mar. 27 incident in which he was accused of leading State Police on a chase through three towns in his Toyota Venza.

At around 10:30 a.m. today, Durgut allegedly walked into the Herb Chambers Toyota dealership on Brighton Avenue and “asked about buying a car to replace the one he recently crashed,’’ according to a press release from Conley’s office.

While browsing the different models on the showroom floor, Durgut allegedly got into a Toyota Venza and drove it forward and crashed into a Toyota Prius and a desk before coming to a stop against a wall. Durgut “continued to rev the engine as if trying to drive through the wall,’’ witnesses told authorities. On the other side of the wall, according to authorities, was an employee who is six months pregnant.

After crashing the van, Durgut walked out of the showroom and was arrested on the 1100 block on Commonwealth Avenue, according to authorities. At today’s arraignment, Judge David T. Donnelly revoked Durgut’s bail for the March incident and ordered Durgut to undergo a mental health evaluation.
