Two men in custody in connection with shooting of man in Falmouth
An 18-year-old and a juvenile were arrested following a shooting in the Teaticket area of Falmouth this morning. Davante Fernandes, of Falmouth, and a 16-year-old boy, also of Falmouth, were arrested after a multi-agency manhunt that forced three schools to go into lockdown mode, authorities said.
“At no time was there a direct threat to any of the schools,’’ Falmouth police said in a statement. “All lockdowns were initiated by the Falmouth Police Department as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the students and faculty.’’
The victim, a 40-year-old Falmouth man who is Fernandes’s stepfather, was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where he was in critical condition, authorities said this afternoon.
Falmouth police were called to a home on Broken Bow Lane around 10:15 a.m. for a report of gunshots. Officers reported that two men ran from the scene and that one could be armed and dangerous. About 15 minutes later, a 16-year-old was arrested on nearby Homestead Lane, police said.
State Police assisted in the manhunt with K-9 units and a helicopter. Around 1:40 p.m., Fernandes was arrested at a home on Gifford Street. Two others were also arrested and charged with being accessories after the fact, police said.
Fernandes was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to commit murder. The juvenile, whose name authorities have not released because of his age, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Both are expected to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court Friday, the Cape and Islands district attorney’s office said.
