Massachusetts man dies in Maine after falling off jetty at an Ogunquit beach

A Massachusetts man died in Maine on Saturday morning after falling into deep water on a beach in Ogunquit.

Police are not releasing the man’s name, but Ogunquit Police Sergeant Matt Buttrick said he was 57 years old and visiting Ogunquit with his husband.

According to Buttrick, the man was walking on Marginal Way, a popular foot path that runs for about a mile along the coast, when he apparently left the path and walked out onto a rock jetty. Buttrick said that the path does not have guardrails.

Buttrick said that the man slipped and fell into very deep water.

When police arrived, they used a boat to get to the man, whom Buttrick said was unresponsive. They began resuscitation efforts and took him to York Hospital in York, where he was pronounced dead.

Buttrick said he wasn’t sure whether the man died from the fall or from drowning. He said that the man’s husband was not injured, but that the police were not releasing any more details about the accident.
