Boston police arrest 8, issue 244 citations at South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade
Boston Police issued 244 citations for drinking in public and arrested eight people, during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston on Sunday, the department said today.
At last year’s parade, police arrested 11 people and issued 363 citations, most for public drinking.
Police described some of the incidents that led to Sunday’s arrests:
Around 2:30 p.m., officers saw a group of people step out onto the parade route near East 4th and O streets. When officers asked the group to step back onto the sidewalk, one man refused.
“The last male in the group walked up to the officer, told him to shut up, chest bumped the officer and then told the officer to, ‘get the [expletive] out of my way,’ ’’ according to a police statement.
The man, 20, from Billerica, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
A short while later, officers near West 8th and Dorchester streets asked a man to pour out the bottle of beer from which he was drinking. Police said the 41-year-old Stoneham man instead chose to chug the rest of the beer, prompting officers to issue him a citation for drinking in public.
“As officers were writing the citation, the suspect, with the empty beer bottle still in his hand, began to wave it around the officer’s head,’’ the police statement said. “After the bottle was confiscated, the suspect began screaming profanities at the officers.’’
The Stoneham man was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace, as well.
On Jenkins Street around 4:40 p.m., officers responded to a call for a person hit in the head by a bottle. The victim had a gash on his head and told officers he was in a fight and that the person he was fighting broke the bottle a bottle on his head, according to the statement.
The victim was taken to Boston Medical Center and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Officers located and arrested Brendan Pembroke, 23, of Boston and charged him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, police said
