1,700 customers briefly lose power in Nahant

A faulty power cable left about 1,700 people in Nahant without electricity for several hours Friday night.

National Grid spokeswoman Jackie Barry said one of the cables that carries electricity over a causeway to the peninsular town failed at about 8:20 p.m.

Technicians quickly restored power by connecting customers to a working cable while they repaired the problem, she said. Power was restored to all customers, except for 10 commercial businesses on the Lynnway, by 10:30 p.m., she said.

“The vast majority are back,’’ she said in a brief telephone interview Friday night. “We restored a large number of customers at about five past nine.’’

The brief blackout comes on the heels of a large swath of Boston’s Back Bay losing power for several days following a three-alarm fire involving transformers serviced by NStar.
