Another dolphin strands on Cape; total for season is at 190
One more dolphin stranded itself just west of Corporation Beach in Dennis Wednesday, raising the number of total strandings so far this year to 190, a Cape Cod-based animal welfare group said today.
“The dolphin was thin and had sustained injuries so it was humanely euthanized,’’ Michael Booth, a spokesman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said in a statement.
Three dolphins stranded themselves near the Chequessett Yacht Club in Wellfleet on Tuesday, Booth said. One dolphin was euthanized, but the other two were successfully released into deeper waters off of Provincetown.
The most recent strandings come after the end of what was the largest single-species stranding event on record in the Northeast. Between Jan. 12 and Feb. 16, 179 dolphins stranded on the shores of Cape Cod. Of the 71 dolphins found alive, 53 were successfully returned to deeper waters.
