Elizabeth Banks gives some love to a Rhode Island writer

Pittsfield-bred actress Elizabeth Banks might be the next Oprah Winfrey — sort of. The “30 Rock’’ and “Hunger Games’’ star, who recently launched her own interactive website, has started a book club for her internet fans and announced Monday that the second novel in the series will be “The Memory Of Running’’ by writer Ron McLarty. McLarty is an East Providence native who also done some acting. He had a recurring role on the Boston series “Spenser: For Hire,’’ and, like Banks, has made appearances on “Law & Order’’ and “Sex and the City.’’ Banks tells her followers in a video that McLarty’s “The Memory of Running’’ is a novel about a friendless drunk who works at a toy factory in Rhode Island. We told McLarty that he was Banks’s new choice for her book club and he emailed to say that he didn’t know her but that “but she is NOW my best friend!’’
