Harvard student Ben Zauzmer predicts the Oscars

Spolier alert: “The Artist’’ will win the Oscar for Best Picture. How do we know? Because Ben Zauzmer says so. The Harvard freshman and film buff has created a formula for predicting the Oscars, and based on his calculations, “The Artist’’ is going to clean up Sunday night. (Not only will director Michel Hazanavicius also win, but, says Zauzmer, “The Artist’’ will take home trophies for cinematography, score, film editing, and costume design.) The precocious undergrad’s predictions factor in a combination of previous Oscar results, other awards shows, current nominations, critic scores, and guild awards. (The numbers – more than 5,000 data points in all – were then plugged into a bit of matrix algebra.) “I’m aware that data alone cannot predict human endeavour, and that politics and preferences will be involved,’’ said Zauzmer. “But it’ll be interesting to see how close I come.’’ You can check out his handiwork at www.oscarforecast.wordpress.com.
