West Yarmouth man dies after car crash near his home

A West Yarmouth man died after crashing his car into an embankment Friday evening, according to police.

Kenneth W. Rautenberg, 68, was driving west on Buck Island Road toward his home on Camp Street in West Yarmouth around 7:30 p.m. when he suffered a “medical event,’’ police said in a statement.

Rautenberg’s 2011 Toyota Camry swerved into the eastbound lane, sped through a stop sign and crashed into an embankment about 30 feet from Camp Street, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Yarmouth police and fire officials removed Rautenberg from his car and transported him to Cape Cod Hospital, where he died in the emergency room, nursing supervisor Nancy Niland said.

Niland said she did not know what had happened to Rautenberg.
