Pawngo apologizes for Butterfingers stunt

On second thought, maybe dumping hundreds of Butterfinger candy bars in Copley Square wasn’t such a good idea. Pawngo.com today apologized for the stunt, which it characterized as “misguided and misdirected.’’ You think? In case you missed it, the online pawnshop thought it would funny – a “lighthearted gesture,’’ in their words – to deliver the candy bars with a sign reading: “Thank You Wes Welker.’’ (The receiver dropped a Tom Brady pass that could have helped the Patriots win Sunday’s Super Bowl.) Today, Pawngo.com CEO Todd Hills is singing a different tune. “We thought that Boston fans would get a laugh out of it. But, for many great Boston sports fans, it was taken offensively,’’ he said in a statement. “Please accept my most sincere apologies. We got caught up in the moment, reacting to a suggestion that we thought would be funny, but we were wrong, and on behalf of everyone involved with Pawngo, I apologize.’’ In addition to being scorned by Patriots Nation, Pawngo was cited by Boston’s code enforcement office for violating commercial dumping ordinances.
