A small Beacon Hill dog stolen earlier this week by two young women outside a supermarket on Cambridge Street was found 20-some miles away in Lowell and returned today, the dog’s owner said.

Pebbles, 4, a Chihuahua-Yorkie mix was tied up in front of Whole Foods on Monday at about 6:30 p.m. while Maria Zamboni’s boyfriend went inside to buy dinner. A witness reported seeing two people playing with the dog outside the store.

About 10 minutes later, when Sean Smith, 26, of Beacon Hill, emerged from the building, Pebbles was gone.

Zamboni, 28, said the couple contacted police, who obtained a surveillance video from Whole Foods that showed two women walking through the back alley of the building with a small dog on a leash.

“Everyone brings their dogs to Whole Foods and just ties them up,’’ said Zamboni, who has been shopping at the store about twice a week since she moved to Beacon Hill about three years ago and usually has Pebbles in tow when she goes.

The plight of Pebbles made a Fox25 newscast. And a man driving through Lowell recognized the dog with two women this morning, Zamboni said.

He pulled over and called out. When Pebbles responded to her name, he confronted the women and asked, “Is this your dog?’’, Zamboni said.

When they didn’t respond, he picked her up, took her to the police station, and then contacted Zamboni, who jumped in the car and brought her home.
