Peabody man killed during single-car crash on Route 128 in Danvers; passenger survives

One person died and another was seriously injured when a vehicle rolled over Sunday night on Route 128 in Danvers, State Police said.

Reginaldo Dasilva Souza, 30, may have been speeding while driving south on the highway when his 1991 Honda Accord crashed into a guardrail, whipped across two lanes, and hit two concrete barriers, which flipped the car onto its roof, police said. The crash occurred at about 8 p.m.

Souza, of Peabody, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.

His passenger, Sidney Gomes Dasilva, 37, also of Peabody, was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but State Police said preliminary indications are that excessive speed may have contributed to the crash. Troopers are also investigating whether alcohol consumption was a factor.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for 90 minutes as authorities responded to the crash.
