Was burned man linked to apparent break-in at South Boston power plant?

Boston police are investigating whether there is a connection between a potential breaking and entering at a South Boston power plant and a man who was treated for burns last night at Boston Medical Center.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, police and fire officials responded to a report of a fire on the third floor of Exelon Power’s New Boston Generating Station at 776 Summer St. Fire department officials determined there was not a working fire, but did observed smoke on the second and third floors. After an initial investigation, police concluded that someone may have broken into the building to steal copper.

While at the scene, police learned that a man had walked in to Boston Medical Center and was being treated for burns. The man was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is now listed in critical condition.

Police said an electric saw, a canvas bag, cigarette butts, and a cellphone were found at the scene. No further information was immediately available.
