A four-alarm fire at a four-story residential building on Beacon Street in Brookline has been brought under control.

Paul Ford, the fire chief in Brookline, said the fire started in the basement and moved quickly to the top of the four-story apartment building.

Firefighters received a call about the fire at 1471 Beacon St. at about 9 a.m. It took several hours to evacuate the brownstone and surrounding buildings and douse the flames.

Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjoining sections of the building, which includes several addresses.

Neighbors said the brick building was quickly engulfed in flames, at one point forcing firefighters to evacuate the building.

Apartments on the third and fourth floors seemed to sustain the most damage. “Flames were shooting out everywhere,’’ said one neighbor. “It all happened so fast.’’

Inbound lanes of Beacon Street remain blocked off.

Ladders were extended to the third and fourth floors to reach residents, and a fire official said all residents have been accounted for.

Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries and one person was sent to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, according to a Brookline police dispatcher.

An investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the fire, and the Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
