Chris Christie takes charge of Mitt Romney’s Iowa campaign, at least for one day

WEST DES MOINES – One of Mitt Romney’s most prominent supporters, who has acknowledged that he could be open to being his running mate, had the clearest audition yet today for such a role.

As the former Massachusetts governor left for a 24-hour trip to New Hampshire, he handed the keys to his campaign over to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. He left him with his Iowa entourage, his giant bus, and his wife, Ann.

“I want to tell you something really clearly,’’ Christie told a crowd of several hundred who stood in cold rain outside a Hy-Vee supermarket. “I’m in a good mood this morning. I’m feeling happy and upbeat, I love being with Mitt and Ann. But let me tell you: If you people disappoint me on Tuesday … I will be back. Jersey style, people, I will be back.’’

After the rally, Romney took a flight to New Hampshire, where he will host a spaghetti dinner in Merrimack tonight and a “Breakfast with Mitt’’ in Hampton tomorrow morning. He will return to Iowa tomorrow afternoon for a sprint to the finish.

Christie, who endorsed Romney this fall after briefly considering a run for the presidency himself, took off for events in eastern Iowa with Ann Romney.

“I’m thrilled to be in Iowa,’’ Christie said. “But I’d rather come back this fall to campaign with Mitt Romney and help you help him.’’
