Dorchester youth, 17, charged with murdering Irish immigrant, shooting two men during October crime spree

A Dorchester teenager has been charged with murdering an Irish immigrant in October, prosecutors say.

John Graham, 17, allegedly killed Ciaran Conneely, 36, in a robbery on Nahant Avenue, a quiet side street near Adams Corner in Dorchester.

A grand jury Tuesday returned an indictment charging Graham with first-degree murder, armed assault with intent to rob, and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office.

Graham is also charged with shooting two men during an attempted robbery Oct. 30 on Monsignor Lydon Way in Dorchester. Boston police arrested Graham Nov. 6 in connection with the shooting, and he has been in custody since. In the course of the investigation, homicide detectives were able to link Graham to Conneely’s murder, prosecutors said.

In the non-fatal robbery, Graham is charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to rob and single counts of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

A date for Graham’s arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court has not been scheduled.

Conneely arrived in Boston a dozen years ago from the Aran Islands, off Ireland’s west coast. He worked in construction, and was known to his friends as “Kiwi.’’ Conneely was the first Irish immigrant killed in Boston in at least 16 years.
