Boston police report three airbag thefts within a week from cars in South Boston

In one week this month, airbags were stolen from three different cars in South Boston, police said.

There is no reason to believe the crimes are related, said Eddy Crispin, a Boston police spokesman.

“Obviously, especially during the holiday season, people will engage and commit crimes if there’s an opportunity,’’ Crispin said.

The first theft happened between Dec. 5 and 9, when a window was smashed and an airbag was stolen from a 2009 Acura TSX parked at the intersection of A and Congress streets, according to a police statement.

Two additional thefts happened the night of Dec. 13 or the morning of Dec. 14, police said. In one theft, gift cards and an airbag were stolen from a 2011 Honda Pilot at 29 Farragut Road; in another, an airbag and a GPS were stolen from a 2010 Acura RL parked at 509 E 1st St.

Airbags are often targeted by thieves because they have a high resale value — attracting prices into the thousands depending on the make and model of the vehicle they come from, said Eddy Crispin, a police spokesman.

It’s hard to spot a stolen airbag, Crispin said, because they are designed to be unique to a model and make of car, but not to a specific vehicle.
