As Deval Patrick travels to Chile, Brazil, his power shifts to William Galvin

Governor Deval Patrick is visiting Chile today on the first stop of his nine-day trade mission to South America.

The Globe’s D.C. Denison has written up a complete recap of the goals for his third trade mission.

“Brazil is the main event,’’ he writes. “Nearly 50 business executives, academic leaders, and government officials will land in Brazil Sunday for a week of networking in the world’s fifth-largest country, with the seventh-largest economy. They will visit Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia, the capital.’’

Denison adds: “Their focus will be to establish partnerships with Brazilian companies and institutions to help break into fast-growing technology, biotechnology, and alternative energy markets in Brazil. Another goal: attract Brazilian investment to Massachusetts.’’

While the governor travels to Chile and Brazil, his gubernatorial powers would normally shift to Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray. Yet Murray is also out of state, visiting Miami for a meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association.

He doesn’t return from Florida until Friday, so Patrick’s authority shifts to the next constitutional officer in line: Secretary of State William F. Galvin.
