People magazine bores into Mitt Romney’s personal life, religious boundaries
People magazine is publishing an interview with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and it asks some questions that pry into his Mormon lifestyle.
One question: Have you ever had a beer?
Romney replied, “Never had drinks or tobacco. It’s a religious thing. I tasted a beer and tried a cigarette once, as a wayward teenager, and never did it again.’’
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints follow a commandment that forbids drinking alcohol, coffee, tea, or using tobacco or illegal drugs.
The magazine also asks what’s on his iPad, assuming he has one.
“On the treadmill, I put it on there,’’ said Romney. “Let’s see: Eagles, Beatles, Roy Orbison, Randy Travis, The Killers. And games: Scrabble, Angry Birds.’’
Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of The Killers, is a fellow Mormon. Romney had lunch with him earlier this year in Las Vegas, and it’s not a stretch to imagine him singing at campaign rallies next year should Romney win the GOP nomination.
