Allston man charged with blowgun attack on dog

An Allston man was charged with cruelty to animals today after firing darts at a dog and its owner through a blowgun, prosecutors said.

Connor M. Thomas, 20, was arraigned this morning in Brighton District Court. He was also charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, the Suffolk County district attorney’s office said in a statement. He was released on $300 cash bail that he posted after his arrest.

Police responded to the area outside of Thomas’s Ashford Street apartment around 3:45 Saturday morning. Officers spoke with a 28-year-old Brighton man who allegedly told police he and his dog were shot by a dart while walking down the street.

The dog began limping, and the man noticed rustling from a nearby building just after the dog was struck, the man told police.

The man gave police a dart he took out of his dog’s back, officials said. Police found two more darts in the ground near where the dog was hit.

Based on the dart’s position, police surmised the dart came from an upper level apartment of 5 Ashford St.

When officers entered Thomas’ apartment, they saw a single dart on a windowsill facing the sidewalk, officials said. Thomas allegedly said the room belonged to his roommate, but that he was the only person involved in shooting the darts. He also said he didn’t mean to hit the dog, and that he threw the blowgun and additional darts out a window, officials said.

Police found the gun stuck in a tree, and a bag of darts on the ground, and arrested Thomas.

Thomas is expected to return to court on Jan. 13.
