Karger tops GOP candidates with time spent in New Hampshire

If retail politics alone were what it took to win the primary race in New Hampshire, the candidate to watch would be Fred Karger.

By the count of New-Hampshire-based WMUR Political Scoop, the first openly gay presidential candidate has spent 74 days in the Granite State, more than any other Republican candidate for president.

Jon Huntsman, who has staked his campaign on a strong New Hampshire showing, has spent 49 days in the state. Mitt Romney, who has a summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee, has spent 33 days, two fewer than Rick Santorum and Buddy Roemer. At the back end, Michele Bachmann has spent 14 days in New Hampshire, Herman Cain 17, and Newt Gingrich 18.

Last is Rick Perry, who has spent 10 days in New Hampshire, according to Political Scoop’s “Candidate Tracker.’’ The count is updated daily by James Pindell (a former Globe reporter) and includes all days since January 1 when candidates have had publicly disclosed campaign events.

Karger is a Republican consultant based in California who has rented a house in Manchester during the primary. His campaign structure is spare and fluid — Karger drives his own rental car, gives his cellphone number to reporters, and answers it himself. A native of Illinois, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver and attended acting school before becoming a political consultant.
