Gloucester man arrested after theft on flight from Iceland

A Gloucester man flying home from vacation in Iceland was arrested at Logan Airport yesterday evening after he allegedly stole about $300 out of a flight attendant’s purse somewhere over Greenland, according to a State Police press release.

Torrey Johnson was charged with larceny over $250 after State Police troopers met Icelandair Flight 631 when it landed in Boston at around 5 pm.

Police believe that in addition to the $300, Johnson took a small amount of foreign currency out of the purse. When the flight crew confronted him, Johnson gave back the foreign currency but locked himself in the plane’s bathroom, where he allegedly flushed the US currency.

Ground crews at Logan were still trying to retrieve the missing money out of the flight’s storage tanks last night, police said.

Johnson was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled for arraignment today in East Boston District Court.
