Two officers are injured while arresting cellphone thieves

Two police officers were injured today while arresting suspects who stole a cellphone from a store on Commonwealth Avenue, Brookline police said.

At 2 p.m., Brookline police responded to the East Coast Alpine store at 860 Commonwealth after a report that three males had stolen a cellphone off the counter, police said in a statement.

Police found the suspects at the Radio Shack at 730 Commonwealth 10 minutes later. Two were arrested and one escaped, police said.

A Brookline officer suffered a minor leg injury while making the arrest of one suspect, the statement said. The officer was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center , as was the suspect, who had been pepper-sprayed by police.

A BU police officer was also injured during the arrest of the second suspect. He is being treated at an on-campus clinic.

Police did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.
