Institute of Medicine names a dozen members from Boston area

The Institute of Medicine today announced 65 new members during its annual meeting in Washington. Among them were a dozen Boston area doctors and researchers and one from New Hampshire. Many are affiliated with Harvard, and several are funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

New members are elected by current ones. At least one-quarter of all members must come from fields outside of health, including from behavioral and social sciences, law, or the humanities. Institute members serve as health advisors as part of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new members from our area are:

Margarita Alegria, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research at Cambridge Health Alliance in Somerville.Frederick W. Alt, an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Charles A. Janeway Professor of Pediatrics and professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, who leads the Immune Disease Institute and Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston. Dr. Karen H. Antman, provost of the Boston University Medical Campus and dean of the Boston University School of MedicineKatherine Baicker, professor of health economics in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard School of Public HealthDr. George Q.
