N.H. poll shows Romney maintaining solid lead

Mitt Romney continues to hold a wide lead over his Republican presidential rivals in New Hampshire, but Herman Cain has surged into second place, further signs of life for the Georgia businessman’s unconventional campaign, according to a new poll sponsored by WMUR, the Manchester television station.

Romney, who has led in New Hampshire presidential polls since 2009, has the support of 37 percent of likely GOP voters. But Cain, a pizza baron whose campaign has been picking up steam since his upset victory at the Florida straw poll last month, may now be Romney’s strongest challenger in the Granite State.

He has the support of 12 percent of likely Republican voters, a standing that indicates he has pushed past Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who has been in second place in previous polls. Paul is now at 9 percent, followed by Jon Huntsman at 8 percent, and Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich, who are at 4 percent each. Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, who have staked their campaigns on strong showings in Iowa, are at 2 percent each.

The telephone poll of 345 likely Republican voters was conducted from Sept. 26 through Oct. 6 by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.3 percentage points.
