Senate casino vote may take at least a week

The State Senate is scheduled to debate casinos this afternoon, but don’t expect senators to get very far in their deliberations. The real action will probably take place next week.

Senate President Therese Murray has said she will let opponents use several procedural moves to delay voting. And because of Rosh Hashanah, the Senate is only in session for two days this week. After tomorrow, they will take an unusually long break for the holiday and won’t return until next Monday.

Last year, opponents dragged out the debate for eight days before a bill passed. The House, by comparison, spent only one day considering and voting on a bill earlier this month.

At a noon press conference today, opponents said they are hoping to use the debate to expose the public to the real effects of the bill.

Despite the dragged out process, Murray said last week that she expects a yes vote. Governor Deval Patrick has also indicated support.
