Fact-checking Mitt Romney

On May 16, Mitt Romney’s presidential exploratory committee announced that it raised $10.25 million during a single phoneathon in Nevada.

“$10.25 million for Romney call day. Not bad,’’ senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said via Twitter.

The Globe reported that day about how the Romney campaign had rented a Las Vegas convention center ballroom, where 720 supporters made calls to lists of ppeople seeking the maximum donation to the former Massachusetts governor’s campaign.

But the report Romney filed last week to the Federal Election Commission, covering the period of the big fund-raiser, showed the Republican had received only $2.4 million that day.

The Democratic National Committee noted today that’s more than $7.6 million short of what Romney claimed.

What’s the difference?

The Romney campaign says $10.25 million was the amount pledged to his second White House campaign on that date.

While credit card donations could be processed immediately, checks may not have been cashed the same day. Checks or other pledges that were mailed in the next day or the next week would be counted later in the fund-raising that quarter.

From May 16 until the end of the quarter, which ran from April 1 through June 30, Romney reported more than $13 million of his $18.25 million fund-raising total.

That figure could easily encompass the $10.25 million pledged on May 16.
