Romney rejects Iowa group’s anti-gay marriage pledge

The Associated Press reported tonight that Mitt Romney will not sign a conservative Iowa Christian group’s anti-gay marriage pledge, becoming the first Republican presidential contender to reject it.

Romney has already made clear he is not basing his campaign’s success on the outcome of next year’s Iowa caucuses, instead focusing his attention on the New Hampshire primary.

The former Massachusetts governor also continues to draw mixed reactions from social conservatives, who are skeptical, among other things, of his conversion to an abortion opponent.

Yet even some 2012 candidates are back-pedaling from the anti-gay marriage pledge, as moderates complain about its sweeping content.

Romney’s decision would align him with those more mainstream forces.
