For a pastoral city escape this Valentine’s Day, a rural North Shore stay is among the best in the world, according to The Hotel Guru.
The 30-room Briar Barn Inn in Rowley was named a great rural hideaway for Valentine’s Day by the curated travel website, which features expert reviews of accommodations worldwide. Guests at the hotel enjoy a farmhouse setting in Rowley’s historic district, located about 30 miles from Boston.
The Hotel Guru released its top 20 worldwide picks for a romantic getaway, organizing them into seven types of travelers: those looking for beachside bliss, character and charm, a rural hideaway, a chic city escape, breathtaking views, relaxation, and something different. Briar Barn Inn, the only New England entry, secured a spot in the rural hideaway category.
The website called Briar Barn Inn “a lovely laidback rural retreat that blends rustic charm with contemporary style.”

The hotel’s Spa at Briar Barn Inn offers facials, massages, foot soaks, wax treatments, and more, and its Grove at Briar Barn Inn restaurant has a full-service bar and serves modern fare with fresh, local ingredients.
Briar Barn Inn’s fireplaces and four-poster beds, offered in select rooms, add even more romance, wrote The Hotel Guru, and couples can spend the day exploring nearby state parks, forests, wildlife sanctuaries, and beaches, or simply relax at the hotel’s spa.
A total of three hotels are listed in the site’s rural hideaway category, and the other two are Delaire Graff Estate in South Africa and Thymises Boutique Hotel in Cyprus.
For travelers booking winter stays, Briar Barn Inn posted a list of activities taking place in and around Rowley in February that include a Galentine’s Bingo Party featuring drag bingo at the hotel’s restaurant, the Salem So Sweet Festival in the historic seaside city of Salem, and winter walks and workshops at Appleton Farms in Ipswich.
