‘We’re feeling that first-snow magic’: New England ski resorts delight in the season’s first snow

The first snow fell at New England ski resorts over the weekend, and officials were downright giddy about it on social media.

“WE’VE GOT NATURAL SNOWFALL FOLKS!” wrote Sunday River officials on the resort’s Facebook page on Saturday. “Our higher summits saw temps dip just low enough to have flakes not just fall, but accumulate. Eyes on the not so distant future to start making snow…”

Then, later on that day, officials at the Maine resort posted more more snowy photos, writing, “Because just one post for the first snowfall is never enough.”

Sunday River, which opened on Nov. 14 last year, has not announced its opening day yet.

“Winter is making its first appearance at Bretton Woods!” said Céline McArthur, the New Hampshire resort’s “Slopeside Storyteller,” in a video posted on Saturday.

“A light dusting of snow is coating the summit of Mount Rosebrook and we’re feeling that first-snow magic,” said McArthur, adding, “The countdown to opening day is officially on!”

Bretton Woods, named the best ski resort in New Hampshire by Boston.com readers earlier this year, will open Nov. 28.

Jay Peak in Vermont, named the best ski resort in Vermont by Boston.com readers earlier this year, also saw flakes fly over the weekend.

The resort posted a photo of a snowy trail on Saturday, writing “Welcome November.”

“Snowmaking has officially begun here at Jay, while mother nature decided to sweeten the deal with some post trick-or-treating snow overnight,” wrote officials.

Jay Peak opens for the season the day after Thanksgiving, a decades-long tradition, which this year is on Nov. 28.

Other resorts celebrated the launch of their snowmaking process as well this season.

“Our snowmaking team officially began their mission last night—to get the mountain ready for the 2025/26 season!” wrote Stowe Mountain Resort officials on the resort’s Facebook page on Sunday. “The crew will continue to make snow as long as the temperatures stay consistently cold.”

Stowe’s slopes will open Nov. 22.

“The switch has been flipped,” wrote Killington officials on Sunday and posted a video of workers making snow on the mountain.

“Snowmaking is officially underway at The Beast, with 175 guns firing across the mountain this weekend — a Killington record to start the season … No opening date just yet, but winter is officially on at Killington.”

Killington opened on Nov. 14 last year.
