Hotels across New England are celebrating after receiving Michelin keys this month.
The 2025 Michelin Guide includes more than 7,000 hotels worldwide and the Michelin key, the hotel equivalent of the Michelin star for restaurants, recognizes the most outstanding properties. This year, there are more than 300 Michelin key hotels in the U.S., with 37 new additions and upgrades.
Michelin inspectors consider five criteria when evaluating hotels for keys: excellence in architecture and interior design; quality and consistency of service; overall personality and character; value for the price; and a significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting.
Hotels can earn one, two, or three keys. A three-key hotel is an “extraordinary” stay, a two-key hotel is an “exceptional” stay, and a one-key hotel is a “very special” stay.

There are 16 three-key hotels in the U.S., but none are in New England (most are in New York and California).
Of the properties awarded two keys in 2025, there are six in Massachusetts, one in New Hampshire, two in Rhode Island, and one in Vermont.

Our heartfelt thanks to our guests for your continued trust, and to our dedicated team for ensuring The Whitney Hotel’s warmth and character shine through in every detail.”

Of the one key hotels this year, there are 10 in Massachusetts, two in Connecticut, two in Rhode Island, nine in Maine, and two in Vermont.
