As convention center activity increases in Boston, a 15-story hotel in Boston’s Seaport has been proposed to help meet the demand.

DGH Hotel Partners filed a letter of intent with Boston’s planning department to build a 438-room hotel at 391 D Street adjacent to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), reported Banker & Tradesman.

The proposal is for a 160,000 square foot hotel, as well as 20 additional rooms at nearby Aloft and Element hotels, which are also operated by the hotel group. Aloft and Element, which have a combined 510 rooms, would increase to 530 rooms, according to the letter. The land for all three hotels is leased to DGH by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA).

Bookings at the BCEC “are on the upswing,” according to the publication, which noted that the convention center’s 49 events this year will generate 575,000 hotel room night bookings.

A major expansion of the BCEC has long been discussed, but a recent report says the Seaport needs more hotels for that to happen and this hotel project could help meet that need, reported The Boston Globe.

“The MCCA plays a pivotal role in our economy, attracting visitors from around the country and internationally and the demand for hotel rooms remains extremely strong,” the developers told Banker & Tradesman. “The DGH Hotel Partners team looks forward to working with the city and the community to advance this project and support the MCCA with much needed additional hotel keys.”

The letter of intent will be reviewed by the city before a possible approval.
