BDC Now: Shark Feeding Frenzy Gets a Little Too Close to the Beach

Sharks are great and all, but we think it would be safer and better for everyone if they didn’t come up onto the land. Apparently they disagree. See how in today’s BDC Now, and read more about the new iPad leaks, Facebook’s natural disaster tool, and why leftover pasta is healthier than fresh pasta.

Nowhere is Safe

For years, beachgoers have happily sifted their toes through the sand, content with the notion that they are safe from the ocean’s top predators. Well, that’s all about to change. A video shot earlier this month at a beach in North Carolina shows why we no longer have the luxury of finding security on dry land. According to the video’s description, 100 sharks were going after a school of bluefish and followed them all the way in to where the water met the sand. Some went even further than that, getting themselves beached while in pursuit of their lunch. We know deep down that sharks really aren’t all that dangerous, but we’re still glad sharks need to stay in the water to breathe. They don’t really strike us as a group we’d be thrilled to share the beach with.

Hey Apple, Your Mini is Showing

Poor Apple. Every time it tries to give the world a new product, it can’t win. The iPhone 6 Plus went through #Bendgate. The company’s new operating system has more than a few issues. And now this: Apple spoiled its own party by accidentally leaking images of the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 the day before the tablets were set to be officially unveiled. CNET was on the case and managed to snag a screenshot of Apple’s official iOS 8 user guide which, for some reason, included pictures of the new tablets and descriptions of some of the new features. The good news is, there aren’t many spoilers because apparently Apple hasn’t done much upgrading for their new line of iPads. CNET wrote that, aside from the addition of a fingerprint scanner and the ability to take “rapid-fire’’ photos, “the iPads appear to be similar to their previous editions.’’ So in a sense, this is barely a leak at all! Congratulations, Apple!

Facebook: Surprisingly Useful During Natural Disasters

Pop Quiz: What’s the first thing you should do in the event of a natural disaster? Answer: Update your Facebook status. That may sound like a joke answer, but there is some truth to it. Mark Zuckerberg and friends did a pretty cool thing and added a new feature called Safety Check to their app. Now, when that tornado hits, “Facebook determines location from cities listed in profiles, last location from the Nearby Friends feature, or the city you’re connecting and using the Internet from.’’ If you’re near the natural disaster, you’ll get a push alert with an “I’m safe’’ button. Push it and you’ll generate a post notifying all your Facebook pals that you’re “still in Kansas,’’ so to speak, and not off having some weird adventure with a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion.

Just One More Reason to Love Leftovers

We know that good meals are hard to leave unfinished, but there are two really good reasons that it’s worth it. First, there is nothing better in life than leftovers. It’s like having two delicious meals for the price of one! And second, it might actually be healthier for you. A BBC show called “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’’ found that once cooked pasta has been cooled down, it behaves less like a carb and more like a fiber. That means the person eating it won’t get hungry again as quickly and will also absorb fewer calories. But the BBC’s Michael Mosley went ahead and stated the obvious in his article following up on that study: “Many people don’t really like cold pasta.’’ Duh. So what happens when you reheat your noodles? Mosley tested it out and found that it actually furthers the effect found in the original experiment, makes your noodles behave even more like a fiber, and makes those leftovers even healthier for you. Thank you, Science. We knew leftovers were good, but only you could show us just how amazing they are.
