Do You Think This is Real? Couple Takes Selfie as Lightning Strikes

This couples’ innocent vacation selfie ended with a bang — literally.

Luis Morales Fukutake and his girlfriend were on a snorkeling outing during a recent trip to Akumal, Mexico when they snapped a selfie that gave them quite a jolt. The video depicts the two posing as lightning apparently struck behind them. The lightning, captured on Fukutake’s GoPro, caused what appeared to be an explosion.

The clip, titled “Almost got hit by a lightning,’’ was uploaded to Youtube on July 24, and has since gone viral. The video hit nearly 3.5 mllion views and recieved more than 620 comments. But many are questioning its authenticity.

Moments before the shot was taken, the couple was ordered out of the water by lifeguards because of a thunderstorm, reports the New York Daily News. But, of course, they had to pose for the selfie first. Fukutake said the blast made them drop the camera.

Or did it?

The video has produced a slew of doubters on Youtube since it was posted. Comments such as, “People are so gullible it’s hilarious,’’ and “This is so fake,’’ were among the replies. And some are posing the question, “If it’s a selfie, why is the camera recording a video?’’

The number of doubters brings to mind the viral shark video we wrote about in June. In that video, a man used his GoPro to capture a supposedly heart-pounding escape from a great white shark. Many viewers accused him of editing it.

What do you think? Is this video fake, or is it real?
