Why You Should Travel to Troll’s Tongue

If you love challenging hikes, mountains, and bizarre-named places, Troll’s Tongue in Norway may be the perfect destination for you.

Trolltunga (known as Troll’s Tongue) is a tongue-shaped rock that juts out horizontally from a mountain above lake Ringedalsvatnet in Skjeggedal Valley in Norway. It is 1100 meters above sea level and one of the most spectacular scenic cliffs in Norway.

The challenging hike to the tongue and back takes about 8 to 10 hours. You’ll need sturdy hiking boots, extra clothing, a map, compass, food, and drink. Be prepared for bad weather. There’s no cellphone service along the route.

“Consider carefully whether you are in good enough shape,’’ warns visitnorway.com.

If you decide Troll’s Tongue is for you, you can make the experience even longer (and more expensive) by booking a four day, three night group hiking adventure with trolltunga-adventures.com.

This trek is different than the trail used by “the masses.’’ You’ll deviate from the main trail and be rewarded with picturesque waterfalls, famous mountain formations, and wild rivers. The path offers varying levels of intensity. At some points, you’re scaling rock using ropes and cables, and at others you’re following reindeer tracks and marveling at a very old farm built by monks.

Here is an example of the flat terrain you will walk. Yes, there is snow there in May.

You’ll have the opportunity to fish in the wild rivers. If you don’t fish, you can take a refreshing swim or bath.

If the weather is nice, you may enjoy a sunset like this one.

You’ll camp out at night and wake up to a breakfast of “newly baked bread and coffee.’’

There’s a three-person minimum and a six-person maximum for each trip. The cost per person ranges from $740 each for a party of six and $990 each for a party of three.

On day four when you finally reach the Troll’s Tongue, the company does not mince words about how you will feel: “We guarantee that it will be an astonishing feeling.’’
