Conn. museum sells statue to launch NASA satellite
Bridgeport’s Discovery Museum and Planetarium is making a calculated trade-off as it launches a significant upgrade to its children’s science education program. The 55-year-old museum is auctioning a 15-foot bronze statue Friday to raise money to outfit and program a satellite the size of a milk carton attached to a NASA rocket beaming back data on space dust. Joe D’Avanzo, museum board chairman, said the sale could raise at least $325,000, which would more than pay for the museum’s nanosatellite, costing $100,000 to $200,000. The satellite will be launched within two years and be programmed to capture small space debris analyzed by students in high school and lower grades.
