An endangered six-month old male baby orangutan rescued from a pet owner learned to climb a tree while undergoing rehabilitation at the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program quarantine area in Sibolangit village located in Indonesia’s Sumatra island. According to environmentalists poachers kill or maim the mother orangutan to take her baby. Experts believe there are about 50,000 to 60,000 of the two species of orangutans left in the wild, 80 percent of them in Indonesia and the rest in Malaysia.They are faced with extinction from poaching and the rapid destruction of their forest habitat, mainly to create palm oil plantations.
