Where to stay
Typically, we love the boutique hotels of Old Montreal, but in winter, we’re all about convenience, so we opt for a place in Centre-Ville (downtown.) On this trip, we chose the Residence Inn Montréal Downtown, at 2045 Peel St. (514-982-6064; www.marriott.com, rooms from $169), near bustling rue Sainte-Catherine, home to numerous shops and restaurants. Plus, the wonderful
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is a short walk away.
Where (else) to eat
One of the city’s hot chefs is Chuck Hughes, who beat Bobby Flay with his lobster poutine ($19). Try it at his bistro, Garde Manger, 408 St-Francois-Xavier, Old Montreal; 514-678-5044; www.crownsalts.com.
And we had some wonderful Thai food, beautifully presented, at the luxurious Thai Grill
