February vacation activities for kids in New England

Tired of seeing your children spend their February vacation in front of the television screen? Instead, get your kids off the couch this winter break and check out some of these awesome activities from around New England.

Climb into the cockpit
The New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, Conn., is offering different activities for kids daily throughtout the break. On Feb. 17 and Feb. 21, climb into the cockpits of these vintage aircrafts and check out the museum’s full-motion flight simulator and two static flight simulators.
Other activities during the week include a LEGO building contest, a scavenger hunt, and a model airplane workshop.
Feb. 17-22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is $12 for adults and $6.50 for kids ages 4 through 12.

Coast down Cranmore
The Mountain Adventure Park at the Cranmore Mountain Resort in Conway, N.H., has a host of activities that will entertain your child this winter break, including tubing, ziplining, and its famous mountain coaster. The park will also have an adjusted schedule to accomodate families visiting during the school vacation.
Feb. 15-24. Hours and prices vary depending on the date and activitiy.

Walk with dinosaurs
Travel back in time and spend the day walking with dinosaurs. The Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, Conn., will be running a number of special programs to pique your child’s interests over the break including arts and crafts, movie screenings, and interactive events featuring live animals.
Feb. 16-17, 19-24. 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Admission is $6 for adults, $2 for kids between the ages of 6 and 12. Children 5 and under are free.

Bugs Bunny film festival
Eh, what’s up, doc? Take a trip down memory lane and bring your child to the 18th Annual Bugs Bunny Film Festival at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge.
Feb. 15-23. Check for show times.
Tickets cost $9.75 for adults, $7.75 for matinee shows before 5 p.m. Tickets for children under 12 and seniors cost $6.75.

Winter fun at Old Sturbridge Village
Head to Old Sturbridge Village this February break and experience how early New Englanders let loose during the winter months. Weather permitting, your child can take a downhill ride on an 1830s style sled, ride on a horse drawn sleigh, or go ice skating right on the museum’s premises (just make sure to bring skates).
There will also be candle-making demonstrations in addition to the village’s usual exhibits.
Feb. 16-24, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $24 for adults and $8 for kids ages 3 through 17. Children 2 and under are free.

Stop by the zoo
This vacation, explore the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence with your child during its “Winter Wonder Days.’’
The zoo is offering a myriad of special programs as well as half-priced admission for the remainder of February.
Now through Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $7.50 for adults and $4.95 for kids ages 3 through 12.

Acting vacation camp
Bring out your child’s inner performer with the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire’s three day “Intro into Acting’’ vacation camp. The aim of the program is to teach kids the basics of acting and becoming comfortable on stage through fun, self-esteem building games.
On the last day, campers get to show off their new skills in a grand, final performance.
Feb. 26-28, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Cost is $105 for museum members, $120 for non-members.

Adopt a teddy bear
Take a tour through the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory and see how these iconic toys are created. Afterward, give your child a lasting, fuzzy memento and adopt a teddy bear.
Open daily. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $3 for adults, children under 12 are free.

Explore the night sky
Explore the night sky with your child at the Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, R.I. Every Friday night, the observatory opens its doors, free of charge, to visitors.
Fridays. 6 p.m.
Admission is free, donations welcomed.

Farm life
The Wolfe’s Neck Farm in in Freeport, Maine, is offering one and two day vacation camps for kids during February break. Activities include winter wilderness survival training, learning how to care for barn animals, and more.
Feb. 18 and 19, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost is $50 per day for members, $60 per day for nonmembers.

Make a movie
Lights, camera, action! Educator Jamie Andrew leads this two-day workshop at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine in Portland, Maine, where your child will learn fun and creative stop-motion techniques.
Kids will work in a groups to create claymation characters, backdrops, and storylines and will receive a DVD copy of their movie following the final session.
Feb. 18 and 19, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Cost is $50 per child for members, $60 per child for non-members.

A spa for kids?
Are coloring books and math class stressing out your child? Take your kid to the KidSpa at the Stowe Mountain Lodge in Stowe, Vt., for a day of fun and relaxation.
Services offered include massages, pedicures, and manicures.
