Make MLK weekend count with your kids

Three-day weekend rhymes with ski-play weekend. I think Martin Luther King, Jr. (while not a skier) would want you to exercise your freedoms and pursue your happiness on his dedicated holiday. This long weekend, your kids might want to line up for tickets to “Avatar,” but you should take them to the ski lift line at your favorite resort instead. They will feel far more accomplished making turns than watching a flick that will soon be available on pay-per-view or blu-ray anyway.
Thinking back on when I was thirteen, I still remember when my Mom took me to Stowe for the first time, and I skied (OK, survived) the Front Four. On my first trip to Killington I was awed by the size. My first ride on the Cannon Tram, it was a little hairy and scary – but oh, so scenic. I recall these ski days like they were yesterday. I can’t, however, list the countless silly movies that I saw as a teen with the same clarity – it’s all a blur of good, bad, and Ghostbusters.

The beauty of the three-day weekend is you can ski one day and still have a two-day weekend to do the usual (read: lame) stuff. Make MLK count.
