A classic movie from the ’90s was the inspiration behind the renovation of a 65-year-old Nantucket hotel.

Boston-based Blue Flag Capital bought the Beachside Hotel for $38 million and transformed it into a seaside family-friendly resort inspired by the 1993 childhood classic “The Sandlot.”

The Beachside Hotel on North Beach Street is a 10 minute walk to Jetties Beach — a recommended sandy spot for beachgoers on the island. The hotel will launch its first full season in May after a soft opening in August and its yearlong renovations were powered by “the idea of an endless summer,” according to the team.

“There is something comforting and nostalgic when watching ‘Sandlot’ so we asked ourselves, how do we evoke this feeling at our hotel? That was the lens by which we designed the property,” said Brad Guidi, co-founder and CDO of Blue Flag, in a statement.

Beachside was built in 1960 when the island was full of artists and craftspeople and the hotel pays homage to that, according to the team. The property features 91 hotel rooms, two suites, open-air balconies, a courtyard, game room, restaurant and bar, newly constructed pool, and more.

Guidi partnered with New York City design firm Parts and Labor for the project. The team created a living room in the lobby with a residential feel using warm hues, one-of-a-kind cantilevered woven chairs, a tiled fireplace, and art work from Maine-based Gayle Fitzpatrick and Rhode Island-based artist Sean Spellman. Guests can relax over a meal or drink at the Lobby Bar & Lounge.

Travelers can choose from single rooms and upscale oversize family suites complete with kitchens.

Guidi describes the new design as fun retro, coastal, and upscale.

“We didn’t use the typical Nantucket color palette, instead, we utilized terracottas, gentle creams, dark greens, and natural woods,” Guidi said. “The centerpiece of the property is the new pool courtyard which will feature a mahogany deck, and plenty of loungers.”

There is a vintage arcade where guests can try their luck at air hockey, skee-ball, and more.

Families can enjoy a private backyard and communal fire pits. The property will provide daily programming that includes movie nights on the lawn.

The hotel’s Swim Club will include poolside table-service and the Kid’s Club will entertain the hotel’s littlest guests with experts from Barnaby’s, an island art studio and toy store.

“I think we can all relate to the first taste of freedom that summer offered us as children – that was the feeling that we tried to evoke at the new Beachside,” said Guidi. “We wanted to offer a space where children and their parents alike would equally enjoy the property.”

Blue Flag’s portfolio includes properties on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, as well as Montauk and Greenport in N.Y. and Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

The starting rate at Beachside is $599 in the summer months, with cheaper rates offered during weekdays and the shoulder season.
