Due to the extremely cold weather expected across New England this weekend, ski resorts are closing lifts and terrain areas and postponing events.
While New England braces for a significant winter storm on Sunday, an “Arctic blast” expected on Saturday is impacting operations at ski resorts across the region.
Sunday River in Newry, Maine will reduce operations on Saturday, according to the resort’s daily snow report.
“An Arctic blast moves in tomorrow with temps plunging deep into the negatives,” wrote Sunday River officials. “While we’re no strangers to cold days, operations will be reduced this weekend to keep both team members and guests safe.”
Officials at Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, Maine will likely close three lifts (King Pine, Timberline, and the West Mountain double chair) on Saturday due to the cold, all part of their effort at “consolidating operations to keep our team and guests safe,” according to the resort’s daily snow report.
“Ski Patrol may also close some remote terrain (lookin’ at you, Brackett Basin) as an added safety precaution,” wrote officials.
Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, Maine will reschedule its Parlor Skis Demo Day on Saturday due to the forecasted temperatures, officials announced in the resort’s daily snow report.
Jay Peak in Jay, Vermont has postponed several events due to the cold.
“With extreme cold and wind moving in on Saturday, a few events will be postponed out of an abundance of caution,” wrote officials on Facebook on Thursday. “The Uphill Education Get-Together, IFSA Junior 2 Extreme Competition, and the 2026 Jay Peak Freeride Friendly will all be rescheduled for a later date, TBD.”
On Friday, in another Facebook post, Jay Peak officials wrote that there’s “a good chance upper mountain lift operations will be impacted” by Saturday’s cold weather.
At Mount Snow in West Dover, Vermont, lifts will be operating with a reduced footprint “to decrease exposure risk,” wrote officials in that daily snow report. The resort is closing down North Face, an expert level terrain area, on Saturday, but noted that normal operations are expected to resume on Sunday.
“If you’re planning to visit this weekend, you will need to dress mindfully with appropriate layers and no exposed skin,” wrote Mount Snow officials.
At Okemo, in Ludlow, Vermont, the Sachem Quad and Glades and Peak Quad will not operate on Saturday and Sunday due to the weather, officials posted on Facebook.
Brandon Swartz, Wildcat and Attitash general manager, wrote in the Wildcat snow report on Friday that he’s monitoring the cold weather and wind for Saturday and will provide an update later in the afternoon about the resort’s plan.
Wildcat staff is working to complete snowmaking tasks on Friday ahead of the cold snap.
“The team is working to get Alley Cat wrapped up ideally ahead of this cold front coming in as frankly the temps we will be experiencing this weekend are too cold to make snow,” wrote Wildcat officials. “Yes this is a thing. When we make snow in ambient temperatures below zero, we risk freezing out water lines, which would have more lasting implications to our continued snowmaking plans.”
