Skiing doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, it doesn’t have to cost anything at all.
Some ski areas in New Hampshire are offering free lift tickets this season.
Veterans Memorial Recreation Area in Franklin, which opens for the season on Saturday, will have Community Free Ski Weekends this season, thanks to local sponsors.
The recreation area, operated by the nonprofit, volunteer-run Franklin Outing Club, has over 50 acres, 10 trails, and 230 vertical feet. It is open Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Storrs Hill Ski Area in Lebanon is offering free skiing for the second year in a row thanks to a gift from the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation.
The free skiing aims to “cultivate a love of skiing that is accessible to all,” according to the ski area’s website.
The ski area, run by the nonprofit Lebanon Outing Club, has 20 skiable acres, a vertical drop of 300 feet, seven trails, one lift, two ski jumps, a terrain park, and night skiing. It is open Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rental equipment is not available.
At Cannon Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire seniors ski for free midweek. The mountain has 287 skiable acres, 98 trials and glades, nine lifts, and a vertical drop of 2,180. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Skiers must be 65 or older for the deal.
Mt. Eustis Ski Hill in Littleton is a community ski hill run by volunteers. It operates on a donation basis so skiing is free, but a $5 donation is suggested for a day pass.
The hill has a main run, a terrain park, and several off-piste glades. It is typically open on select weekends and weekday nights during the season and visitors should check its social media for updates.
