A holiday tradition has ended at a historic property in the Merrimack Valley.
The 91-acre Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens in North Andover will not take part in the large-scale immersive light display “Winterlights” this year, a tradition since 2019.
The property has been one of three Trustees of Reservations garden properties that hosts the event each year, which includes thousands of shimmering lights, festive music, and seasonal treats. The other two are the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton and Naumkeag in Stockbridge, which will both continue hosting the event this season.
Here’s what the Trustees of Reservations posted about the decision on its website:
After many wonderful seasons, Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens will not be participating in Winterlights this holiday season. As stewards of the gardens, we must make challenging decisions that ensure these special places continue to thrive today and for generations to come. We are continuing to prioritize preservation of the historic gardens and structures, and are investing in year-round programming that aligns with the Trustees mission and values. We are so grateful for the countless guests who bundled up and joined us year after year to celebrate the season and create lasting memories with us!
The Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens property will host other holiday programming, including Cookie Decorating with Mrs. Claus, Mingle and Marshmallows, and Sensory-friendly Photos with Santa.
The historic home that belonged to Helen Stevens Coolidge and her husband John Gardner Coolidge, a diplomat and nephew of Isabella Stewart Gardner and descendent of Thomas Jefferson, has been renovated in recent years and offers year-round programming such as workshops, cultural festivals, educational programs, and tours.
“Winterlights” begins Nov. 28 and runs through Jan. 3. Those interested in visiting the remaining two locations in Canton and Stockbridge can get information here.
