Nantucket hospitality is coming to Colorado.
White Elephant, an iconic Nantucket resort, is opening its first western outpost this fall in the world-class ski town of Aspen.
The 54-room White Elephant Aspen, a project by Boston-based New England Development, will be located in the heart of Aspen’s West End neighborhood, steps from downtown and near the Aspen Institute, Harris Hall, and Benedict Music Tent.
Boston-based architectural firm EMBARC is creating an “alpine-chic” modern hotel in the mostly Victorian-inspired Aspen, according to the team. Visitors will spy familiar brand accents like the brass elephant trunk lobby desk and guest room door elephant knockers in the Rocky Mountains getaway. They’ll also dine at White Elephant’s signature restaurant Lola 41, known for its seafood and sushi dishes.
But while the Nantucket property is full of blues and seafoam greens, rattan textiles, white oak, and grasscloth wall coverings inspired by its coastal surroundings, the Colorado hotel will feature a color palette of rust, deep charcoals, and warm whites, along with stone textures, natural woods, and horsehair and rustic stone mosaics. Custom furniture will include hand-painted lamp shades, embossed leather headboards, resin coffee tables, and oil-rubbed bronze light fixtures.
Guests can breathe in the mountain air on private outdoor patios and balconies from select guest rooms and suites, which feature clay wall finishes and porcelain tile flooring. A 1,660-square foot penthouse suite, complete with three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, and dining area, will offer sweeping views from the balcony.
Art is a big part of the White Elephant experience and the Aspen property will showcase more than 125 original works, including the rotating photography of the Maroon Bells by Bob Tabor in the lobby, landscapes by Alex Katz, paintings by Robert Peterson, and special commissions by Orit Fuchs. The hotel, in partnership with the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, will offer an arts summer camp for kids and special programming for guests.
Travelers will enjoy outdoor fun at the hotel by swimming in a year-round heated pool, soaking in two hot tubs, and relaxing beside an outdoor fire pit.
Aspen is known for its skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing during the cold months and hiking, biking, rafting, and more during the warm months. Guests can get to the action via courtesy BMWs, complimentary bikes, and a shuttle to the slopes.
This is White Elephant’s second out-of-state property: White Elephant Palm Beach opened in 2020.
White Elephant Nantucket celebrated its 100th anniversary with a multi-million dollar makeover in 2023. Conde Nast Traveler included White Elephant on its 2024 Gold List, which names the best hotels and resorts on the planet.
