New England is known for its snowy prowess, but USA Today readers stopped short of calling it the nation’s top spot for snow lovers.
The publication released a list of the 10 best destinations for snow on Friday, part of its 2024 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan ranked No. 1, beating out Caribou, Maine at No. 2, Stowe, Vermont at No. 3, and North Conway, N.H. at No. 4.
The snow-covered destinations on its list are “magical,” wrote the publication, and bring many opportunities for outdoor winter activities.
About the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA Today wrote, “From skiing and sledding to snowshoeing and snowmobiling, there’s plenty to do during winter in the Upper Peninsula towns of Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette.”
The runner-up, Caribou, Maine, gets 118 inches of snow a year and “springs to life” with snowshoeing, skiing, ice-skating, and other winter sports, wrote the publication.
Meanwhile, Stowe offers “top-notch” skiing, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing and North Conway has nearly 30 miles of trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. USA Today readers recently named North Conway the best ski town in North America.

For the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards lists, USA Today travel experts select 20 nominees in topics from food to lodging, destinations to things to do. Then the publication asks readers to cast votes to determine the top 10.
