Massachusetts named one of the 20 best places to travel worldwide in 2020
An upcoming 400th anniversary had something to do with it.
Rich history, beautiful beaches, and top-notch universities make Massachusetts one of the 20 best places on the planet to travel in 2020, according to a travel guide publisher.
Editors at Rough Guides picked the 20 spots using inspiration from its travel books released this fall, including “The Rough Guide to the 100 Best Places on Earth 2020,” which featured Massachusetts on what it called “the ultimate travel bucket list.”
For this list, editors divided the top travel destinations into three categories: countries, cities, and regions. Massachusetts is the only U.S. entry among the eight regions. The others are Madeira, Portugal; Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda; Luzon, the Philippines; The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador; Ciudad Perdida and Tayrona National Park, Colombia; Northern Sri Lanka, and Northern Territory, Australia.
Rough Guides editors say the 20 destinations were chosen, in part, because they are especially relevant in 2020. Next year, the Bay State will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower arriving on the shores of Massachusetts. Other standout reasons to visit Massachusetts, according to the editors: Boston, the birthplace of the American Revolution, is the “seafood- and sports-loving capital and one of the oldest cities in America,” the Freedom Trail, Harvard University and MIT, the historic battlefields in Lexington and Concord, Salem, Cape Cod, and the Berkshires.
